Lips are one of the most requested areas for filler, and one of the most personal. A few small choices make a big difference in how your lips look and feel: how much shape you want, whether filler is even the right tool, and when to book around your calendar. Here’s how we help you plan lip filler at Beyond Restore in Newport Beach.
If you want the full overview of fillers for the cheeks, chin, jawline and under-eyes too, start with our dermal fillers guide. This post goes deeper on lips.
What Lip Filler Is
Lip filler is a hyaluronic acid (HA) gel placed in and around the lips. HA is a substance your skin makes naturally; it holds water, which is why treated lips look fuller and smoother. Your body makes less of it with age, which is one reason lips can lose volume over time.
We use HA fillers from Allergan Aesthetics, Galderma and Evolus, and each product is FDA-approved for specific areas in adults. For lips, Juvederm’s smooth gels are often used because they spread evenly for soft, natural-looking volume. You don’t need to pick a brand before your visit. Our medical team chooses the product for your lips based on your anatomy and goals.
Subtle Enhancement or Fuller Volume?
On our dermal fillers page, we describe lip filler as offering “subtle enhancement or fuller volume.” Both are valid goals. The right one is the one that suits your face.
Our approach is conservative. We’d rather build gradually than overdo it, so people notice that you look refreshed, not that you had something done. In practice, that means:
- First time? We can start subtle and add more at a later visit. There’s no rush.
- Want more shape? We map your facial structure and place small amounts where they balance your features, then build from there.
- Uneven lips? Filler can help balance mild asymmetry, and we’ll talk through what’s realistic at your consultation.
Bringing a few photos of lips you like can help the conversation, but we’ll always plan around your own proportions.
Lip Filler vs. a Lip Flip
These two get mixed up a lot, and they do different jobs.
- Lip filler adds or restores volume and shape with an HA gel.
- A lip flip uses Botox, a neuromodulator that relaxes muscles. At Beyond Restore, the lip flip is one of the off-label areas we treat with Botox, meaning it’s outside Botox’s FDA-approved uses.
Because one adds volume and the other relaxes muscle, they aren’t interchangeable. If you’re not sure which fits your goal, that’s exactly what a consultation is for. You can learn more on our Botox page.
Planning Around Events
Results show right away, but lips need time to settle. Swelling goes down and your result settles over about 1 to 2 weeks. If you have a wedding, photos or a trip coming up, plan your lip filler at least 2 weeks ahead.
That timing also lines up with your complimentary 2-week follow-up visit, when we check how your filler has settled and whether a touch-up is needed.
Lips move constantly, so lip filler usually lasts about 6 to 9 months, often sooner than other areas. How long yours lasts depends on the product and your metabolism.
Before, During and After
Before. It starts with a free consultation, where we review your goals, health history and medications. For 24 to 48 hours before treatment, stay well hydrated and avoid alcohol, NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen) and blood-thinning supplements. If you take a prescription blood thinner, don’t stop it on your own; talk with your prescribing clinician and let us know.
During. Treatment usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. We use ultra-fine needles or a blunt-tipped cannula depending on the area, along with topical numbing and fillers with built-in lidocaine. Most people describe a quick pinch, a little pressure or a mild sting.
After. Minor swelling or bruising is normal and usually fades within a few days. For at least 24 hours, avoid alcohol and touching your lips. For 24 to 48 hours, skip heavy workouts, extreme heat or cold, and facial massages. Most people feel comfortable going out the same day.
Risks: What to Know and When to Call
Common, usually temporary effects include swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness and small lumps or unevenness. Less often, people have an infection, firm bumps (nodules), delayed swelling or an allergic reaction.
Rarely, filler can block a blood vessel (vascular occlusion), which is serious and needs treatment right away. Call us immediately at 949-503-9621, or seek emergency care, if you notice unusual or increasing pain, skin that turns white, gray, blue or blotchy, or any change in your vision.
Lip filler isn’t recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of severe allergies or anaphylaxis, are allergic to lidocaine or the bacterial proteins used to make some HA fillers, or have an infection, cold sore or inflammation in the area. Whatever your history, it’s wise to consult a qualified physician before any injectable treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I decide between a subtle look and fuller lips?
Start with how you want to feel, then let your facial structure guide the amount. We often begin subtle for first-timers and build at a later visit if you want more.
Is a lip flip the same as lip filler?
No. Lip filler adds volume with an HA gel. A lip flip uses Botox, which relaxes muscle, and is an off-label Botox use. We’ll help you choose at your consultation.
How far ahead of a wedding or big event should I book?
At least 2 weeks ahead. That gives swelling time to settle and leaves room for your 2-week follow-up.
I get cold sores. Can I still get lip filler?
We don’t treat lips while you have a cold sore, infection or inflammation in the area. Tell us about your history at your consultation so we can plan your timing.
What will my lips look like the first few days?
You’ll see a difference right away. Minor swelling or bruising is normal and usually fades within a few days, and your result settles over about 1 to 2 weeks.
Do I need to choose a filler brand for my lips?
No. Our medical team selects the product for your lips based on your anatomy and goals. Juvederm is often used for lips because of its soft, even spread.
What happens at the 2-week follow-up?
We check how your filler has settled and assess whether a touch-up is needed. It’s complimentary.
Cost and Financing
Cost depends on how much product your lips need, which filler suits them and whether you combine treatments. We’ll give you a clear estimate at your free consultation. Financing is available through PatientFi, CareCredit and Cherry. We also participate in Allē, the Allergan Aesthetics rewards program for Juvederm.
