What Is Renuvion?

Renuvion, made by Apyx Medical and often called J-Plasma, is a minimally invasive procedure designed to address loose skin from underneath. It can be done on its own or paired with liposuction or a tummy tuck.

Renuvion is FDA-cleared for use after liposuction, for improving the appearance of loose skin on the neck and chin, and for contracting soft tissue under the skin.

Why Loose Skin Happens

Loose skin can follow pregnancy, weight loss, aging or liposuction. It often begins below the surface, in the collagen-rich layers that stretch and weaken over time. Renuvion is designed to work on those deeper layers instead of the outer skin.

Treatment Areas

Renuvion can be used on almost any area of the body. Areas Apyx lists as common include:

  • Face and neck, including the chin
  • Chest and breast area
  • Arms
  • Abdomen
  • Back and bra roll
  • Inner thighs and knees

How Renuvion Works

  1. A thin wand under the skin. Through a small entry point, a thin wand is placed just under the skin.
  2. Helium plasma plus radiofrequency. The device combines helium plasma with radiofrequency energy to heat and contract the collagen-rich tissue beneath the surface.
  3. Gradual change. The tissue responds over the following months. Results vary from person to person.

Who May Be a Good Fit

Renuvion may be a good fit for anyone concerned about loose skin or skin laxity, whether it follows weight loss, pregnancy, aging or liposuction. Heavier laxity may call for a surgical option, alone or combined with Renuvion.

Any adult age: There’s no set “right age” for Renuvion. Apyx notes it can be used at virtually any adult age. What matters more are your goals, your skin quality and where you are in your own timeline, whether that’s after weight loss, at the first signs of laxity, or later in life.

Who should wait

A consultation with one of our surgeons determines whether Renuvion fits your goals and health history.

Renuvion or Surgery?

Renuvion contracts tissue beneath the skin. It does not remove skin. A facelift, neck lift or tummy tuck takes a different approach and removes excess skin surgically. Which option fits you depends on how much loose skin you have, where it is, and what you want to change. At your consultation, Dr. Jarminski or Dr. Sabo will examine the area and explain whether Renuvion alone, Renuvion with liposuction, or a surgical option such as a facelift, neck lift or tummy tuck makes more sense for your goals.

What to Expect

Before

A free consultation to review your goals, health history and the areas of concern.

During

Renuvion is performed by Dr. Andrew Jarminski, MD, or Dr. Paris Sabo, MD. When done on its own, you’re awake under local anesthesia, and the procedure takes about 2 hours. Dr. Jarminski is a Certified Renuvion Trainer. Most people need one session.

After

You’ll go home with written aftercare instructions and a compression garment.

Recovery

  • First days: expect swelling, bruising and tenderness. Follow your written aftercare plan.
  • First weeks: Apyx notes that recovery can range from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the number of areas treated and the anesthesia plan.
  • Weeks 4 to 8: you’ll keep wearing your compression garment for about 4 to 8 weeks.

When Renuvion is part of a liposuction or tummy tuck procedure, your plan follows the aftercare instructions for that procedure.

Results

Changes from Renuvion come on gradually. According to Apyx Medical, it can take 6 to 9 months for results to fully develop. How long results last depends on the individual. Results vary, and no specific outcome can be promised.

Comfort

Renuvion on its own is performed while you’re awake under local anesthesia, so the treatment areas are numbed during the procedure.

Renuvion with Liposuction or a Tummy Tuck

Renuvion is offered on its own, and it is also part of the 3-in-1 technique used in HD Liposculpture: VASER, HD liposuction and Renuvion in one awake procedure. It can also be paired with a tummy tuck. Your surgeon will explain which combination fits your goals.
