Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammaplasty) in Newport Beach

Surgical Breast Reduction to Reshape and Resize

Large breasts can feel out of proportion with your frame and make clothing and activity harder. A breast reduction, known medically as reduction mammaplasty, removes breast tissue, fat and excess skin to create smaller, reshaped breasts. At Beyond Restore, breast reductions are performed by fellowship-trained surgeon Dr. Paris Sabo, MD.

What Is a Breast Reduction?

A breast reduction is a surgical procedure that makes the breasts smaller. Breast tissue, fat and excess skin are removed, the remaining tissue is reshaped, and the nipple and areola can be moved to a higher position.

A breast reduction can be combined with a breast lift or with liposuction.

Breast Reduction Treatment Areas and Concerns

A breast reduction is designed to address concerns such as:
  • Breasts that feel too large for your frame
  • Breasts that make clothing, bras or activity uncomfortable
  • Heavy breasts that sit low on the chest
  • Breasts that differ in size from one another
  • Back, neck or shoulder discomfort that you feel is related to breast size

Back, neck and shoulder discomfort are concerns people commonly bring up when considering a breast reduction. Dr. Sabo discusses these concerns, and what surgery can and cannot be expected to change, at your consultation.

How It Works

1. Planning

Dr. Sabo reviews how much tissue to remove and the breast shape you are aiming for.

2. Choosing the Incisions

An incision pattern is chosen based on the amount of reduction and your anatomy.

3. Removing Tissue

Breast tissue, fat and excess skin are removed.

4. Reshaping

The remaining tissue is reshaped, and the nipple and areola are moved to a higher position.

5. Closing

The incisions are closed and dressings are applied.

Breast Reduction Incision Options

  • Vertical (lollipop): an incision around the areola and straight down to the breast crease.
  • Anchor: an incision around the areola, down to the breast crease, and along the crease.
The right incision pattern depends on the individual and is decided at your consultation.

Combining Your Breast Reduction

A breast reduction can be combined with a breast lift or with liposuction in the same surgery.

What to Expect Before, During, and After a Breast Reduction

Before

At your free consultation, Dr. Sabo reviews your health history, examines your breasts, and talks through your goals, the incision options, and whether combining with a lift or liposuction makes sense for you.

During

A breast reduction is performed under local or general anesthesia and typically takes about 2 to 3 hours. There is no overnight stay.

After

Expect swelling, soreness and tightness at first. Many people take about one week of downtime and wait about 6 weeks before returning to exercise. You will receive aftercare instructions, and recovery varies from person to person.

Risks

As with any surgery, there are risks, including scarring, bleeding, infection, changes in nipple or breast sensation, asymmetry, wound complications and anesthesia risks. Your individual risks are reviewed at your consultation.

Results Timeline

  • First week: downtime at home; swelling and soreness are expected.
  • About 6 weeks: a typical point for returning to exercise, once you are cleared.
  • Following months: swelling continues to settle and the new breast shape becomes easier to see. Incision lines tend to fade over time. Individual results vary.

Is a Breast Reduction Right for Me?

A breast reduction may be worth considering if your breasts feel too large for your frame or get in the way of daily life. Whether it is right for you, and which incision pattern fits, is decided at your free consultation after a qualified medical professional reviews your health history and goals.
