Tummy Tuck in Newport Beach: Candidacy, Recovery & Cost Guide

If you’ve done the work (lost the weight, gotten back to the gym after a pregnancy, or simply watched your midsection change with time) and your stomach still doesn’t reflect it, you’re not alone. Loose skin and separated abdominal muscles don’t respond to crunches or diet. For many people, that’s the point where a tummy tuck comes up.

At Beyond Restore, patients ask us practical questions about abdominoplasty: Who is it really for? How long is recovery? What does it cost in Newport Beach? This guide answers them honestly, so you can walk into a consultation knowing what to ask.

What a Tummy Tuck Actually Does

A tummy tuck (the medical term is abdominoplasty) is a surgical procedure that reshapes the abdomen in ways exercise and non-surgical treatments can’t. Depending on your anatomy, it can:

  • Remove excess, stretched skin from the lower abdomen
  • Repair separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) by stitching them back together, a step called rectus plication
  • Reposition the belly button so it sits naturally on the newly contoured abdomen
  • Pair with liposculpture to refine the waist and flanks when appropriate

The incision is typically placed low, along the bikini line, so the scar can sit beneath most underwear and swimwear. A tummy tuck is a contouring procedure, not a weight-loss procedure. It works best once you’re at or near a weight you can comfortably maintain.

Types of Tummy Tucks We Discuss in Consultation

Not every abdomen needs the same operation. On our abdominoplasty page, we outline the main approaches:

Full Tummy Tuck

The most comprehensive option: muscle tightening, skin removal, and belly button repositioning across the full abdominal wall. Often a fit for post-pregnancy changes or moderate loose skin above and below the navel.

Mini Tummy Tuck

A shorter incision focused on the lower abdomen, below the belly button, usually without repositioning the navel. Generally for a smaller amount of loose skin low on the abdomen.

Extended Tummy Tuck

Carries the correction further toward the flanks and hips. This is commonly considered after significant weight loss, when loose skin wraps around the sides.

Reverse Tummy Tuck

Targets loose skin above the navel through an incision hidden in the breast crease. It can pair well with breast procedures. Learn more on our reverse tummy tuck page.

Which one is right for you depends on where your skin laxity is, whether your muscles have separated, and your goals. That’s a decision you and your surgeon make together after an in-person exam.

Are You a Good Candidate?

You may be a candidate for a tummy tuck if you:

  • Have loose or overhanging abdominal skin after pregnancy, weight loss, or aging
  • Have abdominal muscle separation that makes your stomach protrude even at a healthy weight
  • Are close to a stable, maintainable weight
  • Are in good overall health, with any medical conditions well managed
  • Don’t smoke or use nicotine, or are willing to stop for the period your surgeon specifies (nicotine can interfere with healing)
  • Have realistic expectations about scarring and recovery

A few situations call for a closer conversation. If you’re planning future pregnancies, many surgeons recommend waiting, since pregnancy can stretch the skin and muscles again. If you’re still actively losing weight, including on a medically supervised program, it usually makes sense to reach your plateau first.

Tummy Tuck After Weight Loss (Including GLP-1s)

More patients are coming to us after significant weight loss, including weight loss with GLP-1 medications through programs like our Body by Beyond medical weight loss program. Losing a large amount of weight can leave behind skin that has lost its elasticity, and no amount of exercise will tighten it.

Because medical weight loss and surgery are under one roof, we can help you reach a stable weight first, then plan surgery when your body is ready.

Tummy Tuck vs. Non-Surgical Options

Because we offer both surgical and non-surgical body contouring, we can give you a straight answer about which category fits your concern:

  • HD Liposculpture removes stubborn fat, and at Beyond Restore it’s performed awake under local anesthesia. It does not remove significant loose skin or repair separated muscles. Liposculpture is sometimes combined with a tummy tuck.
  • EmSculpt NEO works on muscle tone and fat reduction without surgery, but it can’t stitch separated muscles back together.
  • Morpheus8 Body uses radiofrequency microneedling to improve skin texture and mild laxity. It isn’t a substitute for removing a meaningful amount of excess skin.

If you have loose skin, muscle separation, or both, a tummy tuck is usually the procedure that addresses them directly. If it’s mainly stubborn fat with good skin tone, a less invasive option may be the better first step.

What to Expect: Before, During & After

Before Surgery

Everything starts with a consultation. Your surgeon reviews your medical history, examines your abdomen, and talks through your goals and the approach that fits them. If you move forward, pre-operative steps typically include lab work, incision planning, and detailed instructions about medications, supplements, and nicotine to avoid.

The Day of Surgery

At Beyond Restore, we offer tummy tucks two ways: awake, under local anesthesia, in our onsite surgical suite, or under general anesthesia, at an accredited ambulatory surgery center (ASC). You and your surgeon choose the approach at your consultation, based on your health, your anatomy, and the extent of your procedure.

The surgery typically takes about 2 to 4 hours, depending on the technique and whether other procedures are combined. Either way, you’ll need someone to drive you home and help you for the first few days.

Beyond Restore’s tummy tucks don’t use drains. Your care team will give you instructions for caring for your incision and managing swelling.

Tummy Tuck Recovery Timeline

Every recovery is different, but here’s the general arc we walk patients through:

Week 1: You’ll start wearing a compression garment (faja), which you’ll wear for about 8 weeks as directed, and keep movement limited. It’s normal to walk slightly bent at the waist at first to protect the incision. Soreness, tightness, and swelling are expected and managed with your prescribed plan.

Weeks 2 to 3: Swelling starts to come down, and light walking is encouraged to support circulation. Most patients return to light activity within about 2 to 3 weeks.

Around 4 weeks: Exercise can usually resume once your surgeon clears you, based on how you’re healing.

Months 3–6: Your final abdominal contour may become visible as residual swelling resolves. Scars continue to fade and soften over the following months.

At Beyond Restore, recovery is physician-led, with follow-up visits so your surgeon can check your healing along the way. We also recommend lymphatic massage after surgery, which may help with swelling and comfort while you heal.

Risks to Know About

A tummy tuck is real surgery, and it’s important to understand the risks. They include bleeding, infection, reactions to anesthesia, fluid buildup (seroma), blood clots, visible scarring, asymmetry, delayed wound healing, and temporary or lasting numbness of the abdominal skin. Your surgeon will review your personal risk factors and how we work to reduce them. Results vary from person to person, and no surgeon can guarantee a specific outcome.

How Much Does a Tummy Tuck Cost in Newport Beach?

This is one of the first questions most people ask, and the honest answer is that cost depends on your plan. The main factors include:

  • Type of procedure: mini, full, extended, or reverse
  • Combined procedures, such as liposculpture or breast surgery
  • Anesthesia and setting: awake (local) anesthesia in our onsite surgical suite, or general anesthesia at an accredited ASC
  • Pre-operative labs, garments, and post-operative care

Your cost depends on the individual plan we set together at your consultation, and we provide a personalized quote so you know what’s included before you decide.

To help make surgery fit your budget, we offer financing through PatientFi, CareCredit, and Cherry. Because a cosmetic tummy tuck is elective, it is generally not covered by health insurance.

Why Patients Choose Beyond Restore for a Tummy Tuck

  • Fellowship-trained cosmetic surgeons. Tummy tucks at Beyond Restore are performed by Dr. Andrew Jarminski, a fellowship-trained cosmetic surgeon known to many patients as “Dr. J.”, or Dr. Paris Sabo, a fellowship-trained cosmetic surgeon.
  • Awake or general anesthesia. We offer both: awake, under local anesthesia, in our onsite surgical suite, or general anesthesia at an accredited ambulatory surgery center. You and your surgeon choose at your consultation, based on your health and comfort.
  • One practice, the whole journey. Medical weight loss, hormone care, non-surgical contouring, and surgery live under one roof, so your plan can reflect your whole health picture.
  • Honest guidance. If a less invasive option fits your goals better, or now isn’t the right time for surgery, we’ll tell you.
  • Concierge-level care in Newport Beach. We care for patients from Newport Beach, Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, and across Orange County.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is recovery from a tummy tuck?

Most patients return to light activity within about 2 to 3 weeks, and exercise can usually resume around 4 weeks, once your surgeon clears you. You’ll wear a compression garment (faja) for about 8 weeks. The final contour may be visible around 3 to 6 months, as swelling resolves and scars mature. Your surgeon will give you a personalized timeline.

Can a tummy tuck fix diastasis recti?

Yes. During a full tummy tuck, the surgeon can repair separated abdominal muscles by stitching them back together (rectus plication). This restores a firmer abdominal wall in a way that exercise alone typically can’t.

What’s the difference between a mini and a full tummy tuck?

A mini tummy tuck treats loose skin below the belly button through a shorter incision and usually doesn’t reposition the navel. A full tummy tuck addresses the entire abdominal wall, including muscle tightening, skin removal, and belly button repositioning.

Where is the tummy tuck scar?

The incision is typically placed low on the abdomen along the bikini line, so the scar can usually be hidden by underwear or swimwear. A full tummy tuck also involves a small scar around the belly button. Scars fade and soften over months but don’t disappear completely. Once your incision has healed, optional scar-care support such as silicone therapy and PRP is available.

Should I have a tummy tuck before or after having children?

Many surgeons recommend waiting until you’re finished having children, because a future pregnancy can stretch the abdominal skin and muscles again. We’re happy to talk through your timing during a consultation.

Can I combine a tummy tuck with other procedures?

Often, yes. Patients commonly pair a tummy tuck with liposculpture or breast surgery, sometimes as part of a “mommy makeover.” Whether combining procedures is safe and sensible for you depends on your health and goals, and your surgeon will discuss it at your consultation.
